Violet Tides
Violet Tides began as an experiment with a technique I had never tried before. I chose a palette of violet, pink, blue, and black—colors I naturally love—and decided to use a blow dryer to move the acrylic paint across the canvas.
The air pushed the colors in directions I couldn't completely control, creating expanding shapes, unexpected edges, and areas where one color flowed directly into another. I enjoyed watching the composition develop without being able to predict exactly where the paint would go. It was a very different experience from building a painting with deliberate brushstrokes and lines.
The experiment was memorable for another reason: I quickly discovered that a blow dryer doesn't necessarily understand where the canvas ends. By the time I finished, considerably more than the painting had received a new coat of color. It was one of my first—and one of my last—experiments with that technique.
Despite the cleanup, I loved what happened on the canvas. Violet Tides captures the spontaneity of that process and a palette that still feels completely natural to me. The resin finish intensifies the colors and gives the surface a luminous, almost glass-like depth.
