“Scattered Frequencies”

Scattered Frequencies is about rhythm, interruption, and the energy created when seemingly unrelated marks begin to communicate with one another. Bold blacks and vivid reds move across a predominantly white surface, creating a visual rhythm that shifts between order and spontaneity.

I built the painting through layers of modeling paste, acrylic paint, and mixed-media techniques, using unexpected materials to create many of the patterns and impressions. The small grid-like squares, for example, were created using the texture of a basket. I enjoy experimenting with ordinary objects in this way, transforming their patterns into something entirely different on the canvas.

The heavy texture gives the painting a strong physical presence, while the repeated marks, grids, circular forms, and bold vertical strokes create a rhythm that shifts between order and spontaneity. Some patterns repeat while others seem to appear and disappear, almost like fragments of a signal moving in and out of range.

What I especially like about this painting is the tension between its limited palette and the amount of energy within it. With essentially red, black, and white, the texture and pattern become just as important as the color.

For me, Scattered Frequencies reflects the constant stream of impressions, thoughts, and emotions that surround us—some clear, some fragmented, and some gone almost as quickly as they appear.
