Midnight Swirls in Gold

Midnight Swirls in Gold was an opportunity for me to try something different—creating a diptych in which two individual canvases would connect to form one continuous composition.

I wanted the paintings to work both independently and together, so the placement of the sweeping gold lines became especially important. As I moved from one canvas to the other, I had to make sure the lines aligned correctly, allowing the movement to continue naturally across the space between them. It was a challenge, but it was also a process I genuinely enjoyed.

Layers of blue, black, gray, and white create a loose, expressive background, while the metallic gold swirls bring structure, movement, and light to both panels. The contrast between the freer brushwork and the more deliberate gold lines became an important part of the composition.

Midnight Swirls in Gold has special meaning for me because it was one of the first paintings I created when I decided to pick up painting again. Looking back, I can see myself rediscovering the enjoyment of experimenting, solving problems, and simply having fun with the process. Creating two separate canvases that had to connect challenged me in a new way and reminded me how much I enjoyed making art.
