Green with Envy
Green with Envy developed through experimentation with layering. I began without a predetermined outcome, allowing one area of color and one brushstroke to lead naturally into the next. As the layers developed, the painting gradually found its own direction.
Bright greens became the dominant color, balanced by areas of black, gray, and white. I was interested in seeing how the layers could overlap while still allowing individual shapes and marks to remain visible. Some areas became more solid and structured, while others remained loose and expressive, creating movement throughout the composition.
This is one of those paintings that evolved simply by responding to what was happening on the canvas. Rather than following a plan, I made each decision based on the one that came before it—a process that allowed the finished work to emerge gradually.
The title came later—and from somewhere unexpected. I invited my Instagram followers to help name the finished painting, and Green with Envy was the winning choice. It felt like the perfect name for a painting in which green had ultimately taken center stage.
