Veins of Gold

Veins of Gold marks another point of experimentation in my work. It was the first time I incorporated gold leaf and Gelli-printed paper into a painting, along with the intersecting lines that were becoming part of my visual signature.

Bold areas of turquoise and deep blue move against black and white, while the gold leaf travels through the composition, catching the light and adding another dimension to the surface. I wanted the gold to feel integrated into the painting rather than simply placed on top of it—almost like veins moving through the work. I also created pieces of painted paper using a Gelli plate and incorporated them into the canvas as a kind of hidden collage. They aren’t immediately obvious. I like that you have to look closely to discover them; they become small surprises within the larger composition. Fine intersecting lines move across and through these layers, connecting the different materials and areas of color.
