Quiet Moss
Quiet Moss is one of my favorite paintings, in part because of the process I used to create it. I began by building texture with modeling paste, creating a surface that allowed me to work into the painting rather than simply paint over it.
I used a comb to pull lines through the textured surface, creating repeated marks and subtle patterns throughout the composition. As the painting developed, areas of moss and sage green, black, soft pink, gray, and warm neutrals began to overlap and interact. I then returned with a very thin brush, outlining selected shapes to give them greater definition and bring another level of detail to the work.
I enjoyed the contrast between the rougher, tactile surface and those more controlled, delicate lines. Some areas remain loose and expressive, while others are deliberately defined, allowing the eye to discover small details within the larger composition.
I especially love the palette in this painting because it took me away from the colors I usually gravitate toward. My work often leans toward either bold, vibrant color or the strong contrast of black and white. Here, the moss and sage greens, softened pinks, grays, black, and warm neutrals created something quieter and more restrained. I found myself drawn to that softness and to the way the colors worked with the textured surface.
Quiet Moss doesn't demand attention all at once. It invites a closer look, revealing its colors, textures, lines, and layers gradually—and that is one of the reasons it remains one of my favorite paintings.
