“Eclipse of Motion”

Eclipse of Motion explores the relationship between movement, texture, contrast, and change. The entire canvas begins with a thin layer of modeling paste, creating a richly textured surface before the first layers of color are added. Blues, blacks, purples, and whites move across that surface, catching on the raised texture and creating areas that shift between darkness and light.

As I worked, I allowed the brushstrokes to follow and respond to the texture beneath them rather than trying to completely control the composition. The modeling paste gives the painting a tactile quality and added dimension, allowing light and shadow to change subtly depending on where the painting is viewed.

What interests me about Eclipse of Motion is that it never feels completely still. Different layers seem to move forward or recede, revealing something new as your eye travels across the surface.

For me, the painting captures a moment of transformation—when movement, light, and shadow briefly come together before changing again. As with all of my abstract work, I leave its final meaning open to the viewer.
